Automation Technician

Hartley People Recruitment is working with a well-established and highly automated manufacturing operation to recruit an Automation Technician for a permanent position based in Clonmel.

This opportunity will suit someone with strong automation, troubleshooting and maintenance experience who enjoys working closely with production in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting plant performance, equipment reliability and continuous improvement activities across the facility.

The role operates on a four-day workweek, with some flexibility to support occasional breakdowns when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain automation and production equipment to ensure strong performance, efficiency and output levels across the manufacturing operation
  • Carry out fault finding and structured troubleshooting activities to identify root causes and minimise downtime
  • Perform both preventative and reactive maintenance activities while ensuring all maintenance records and documentation are completed accurately
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives focused on operational efficiency, reliability and process optimisation
  • Assist with installation, commissioning and startup of new equipment and manufacturing projects
  • Manage and maintain appropriate spare parts stock levels for critical equipment
  • Support technician cross-training and knowledge sharing across the maintenance function
  • Work closely with production and maintenance teams to optimise machine performance and minimise disruption to operations
  • Participate in equipment changeovers, startups and line support activities as required
  • Assist with reviewing preventative maintenance schedules and ensuring planned maintenance targets are achieved
  • Ensure compliance with GMP, quality and food safety standards across all maintenance activities
  • Support company safety initiatives and maintain safe working practices across the site
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and ensure compliance with internal procedures and audit standards
  • Occasionally travel for equipment training, factory acceptance testing or supplier support activities where required

Candidate Requirements

  • Level 6, Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in Manufacturing Technology, Automation, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Electronics or a related discipline
  • Qualified trades candidates with strong industrial automation experience will also be considered
  • Previous experience working within a high-volume automated manufacturing environment
  • Strong fault-finding experience across automation, electrical and production equipment systems
  • Experience with areas such as pneumatics, hydraulics, PLCs, servo drives, robotics, vision systems or automated production machinery would be highly advantageous
  • Good PC and systems skills
  • Strong communication and teamwork abilities with a practical, hands-on approach to maintenance support
  • Ability to work independently while also contributing effectively within an integrated production environment
  • Logical and methodical approach to troubleshooting and problem solving
  • Comfortable balancing both hands-on technical work and broader maintenance coordination responsibilities
  • Flexible attitude with the ability to respond effectively within a fast-paced production setting

Desirable

  • Experience within food, beverage, pharmaceutical or high-speed manufacturing environments
  • Exposure to GMP-regulated production settings
  • Experience supporting continuous improvement or process optimisation projects
  • Previous involvement in equipment commissioning or startup activities
  • Familiarity with preventative maintenance systems and maintenance planning processes
