The ECDL syllabus offers the knowledge and the skills required to achieve the ECDL standard. It covers all basic computer skills and the use of common applications in the workplace and the home.

It is divided into seven modules, 6 practical and 1 theoretical. A test in each module must be passed before ECDL certification is awarded.

The 7 ECDL modules are as follows:

Module 1 Basic Concepts of Information Technology

Module 2 Using a Computer and Managing Files

Module 3 Word Processing

Module 4 Spreadsheets

Module 5 Databases

Module 6 Presentation

Module 7 Information and Communication

The tests in these modules do not have to be taken in any specific order.

When a candidate registers on an ECDL programme, they receive a Skills Card on which their progress through the seven tests is recorded. When all seven modules are completed, the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL) is awarded.

Equalskills is an informal introduction to computers and the Internet. It is designed to increase skills in basic computer literacy. It aims to introduce technology to all people, regardless of education, age or ability. Equalskills is a flexible learning programme, with a proven track record in equipping people with the basic computer skills they need to become part of the information society.

The aim of the programme is to make people feel comfortable using a computer, and to teach them the basic skills necessary to communicate using the internet and email. It is well structured with excellent training resources, and it has the added bonus of providing certification to candidates who complete the programme.

Equalskills covers everything that a beginner needs to know to be able to use the computer in a meaningful way. The programme explains the different components of a computer, and how to use the mouse and keyboard to give instructions to the computer.

Essential skills, like opening and closing windows are included, as well as how to create a word processing document.

The central content of Equalskills is the use of the internet and email. The learner will be able to use the internet to search for information, and to send and receive emails.
